You slide into the drivers seat of a 2021 Gladiator Rubicon, and it immediately feels like something that expects to be driven off the road-bold, capable, and unapologetically rugged. This isn't a truck trimmed for luxury; its built for adventure and utility, but with enough creature comforts that you don't feel like you're in a workbench experiment.

What Powers It & How It Drives

Under the hood of the Rubicon there are two main powertrain options. The standard is a 3.6liter Pentastar V6 that makes around 285 horsepower and 260 lb/feet of torque. Then there's the 3.0liter EcoDiesel V6 option which delivers more torque about 442 lb/feet giving much more grunt for towing or crawling over rough terrain.


Transmission choices depend on which powerplant you pick. If you go gasoline you might have the 6speed manual (for those who like a more hands-on driving feel) or an 8speed automatic. The diesel is paired with the 8speed auto by default.

The off-road capability is what really differentiates the Rubicon trim. It comes with Jeeps Rock-Trac transfer case which gives a 4.0:1 low range gear ratio, electronically locking front and rear differentials, a disconnecting front sway bar, 33inch off-road tires, winch ready bumpers, etc. Its made to crawl, climb, and handle rough terrain.


On pavement, it feels heavy, tall, and the ride is competent but not plush. You'll hear more road and tire noise than in a luxury truck, especially with the off-road tires and rugged suspension. But for what it is, it handles highway driving well enough, especially when not overloaded. Fuel economy is modest you give up efficiency for capability. The diesel helps mitigate that some, especially under load or towing.

Comfort, Features, & Practical Use

Inside, Jeep gives the Rubicon touches that surround the rough stuff. You get more durable materials, better seats, a leather wrapped steering wheel, premium cloth or optional upgrades, more tech than the base Gladiators, etc. Its not luxury, but its livable.

Tech includes modern infotainment (Uconnect), Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, trail oriented aids, safety features (blindspot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, etc.) depending on packages. The bed gives real utility, and even though the Gladiator is big, the removable roof / doors / front windshield add that Jeep swagger and flexibility.

Towing and payload are respectable if properly set up. In many cases you'll be able to tow trailers, haul gear for outdoors, etc. The payload (how much bed load you can carry) is lower than some full-size pickups, especially if you have the diesel or heavier off-road gear
